Randall C. “Randy” Houston, CPA, is a native Houstonian with deep East Texas roots; his parents and grandparents grew up in small towns there. (He has looked into whether he is related to Sam Houston. “Alas, I can’t trace our roots directly to General Sam. What a shame that is!”)

Houston joined the board through HRC’s partnership with Star of Hope Mission, its neighbor beside the Sobering Center. Star of Hope holds three seats on the HRC board, and he fills one of them. He also serves on the board’s finance committee.

He counts his years on the management team of Star of Hope, a Christian social services mission that has served Houston for more than a century, as the highlight of his career. “To be successful in a nonprofit, you have to be personally invested in the mission,” he says. “It’s not about profit or money. We’re about saving lives and saving souls.”

He believes the need for the Sobering Center will last. “I think the kind of issues the sobering center deals with will always be here. And perhaps even more so in stressful times.”
